How to go Unconventional: Kate Crocco shares her story

This January I interviewed 19 amazing Entrepreneurs.  We talked about our unconventional lives.  I loved interviewing these successful people.  Tune in as they share their messages of how being unconventional and unique will drive your life and business forward.  Sometimes we have to think outside the box and take risks.  Most the time if we plan and stick to the plan we will achieve.

I hope you enjoy listening to these interviews all over again, while you are here don’t forget to snag your copy of the workbooks!

I'm Kate Crocco, a trained Psychotherapist now doing Confidence & Mindset Coaching with women in business. I help women create a mindset for success by supporting you in: Leaving your comfort zone and stepping into your “zone of genius”. Setting boundaries and LOVING your life and business again. Saying goodbye to the fear and scarcity mindset, and accepting abundance as your natural birthright. Showing up confidently in all areas of your life and business. Stretching and growing your faith, and evolving into the person you’re meant to be. And lastly, speaking effortlessly about your services, easily enrolling clients in your programs, and seeing cash come in. A personal side of me: I've been married for about 4 years, but have known my hubs since we were 15 years old! We adopted a fur baby last February who we are absolutely in LOVE with and expecting our first human baby in four months. I'm a pretty extroverted person (ENFJ), but need quite a bit of alone time to dream, process, and be still in my thoughts. I love to read, bake, cook, and watch Fixer Upper (pretty much the only tv I will watch)! And I've actually done quite a few home renos with the hubs over the past few years!

18 Creative ways to Network

Networking is such a wonderful thing….

I love networking for: meeting new people, meeting potential clients, growing my business, making friends and getting out of my comfort zone.

I tell people all the time about the crazy ways I get clients and meet people in general.  They always want to hear more of my crazy networking ideas, so here is a list of creative ways to network!

  1. Social Media (duh!)
  2. Facebook:  join groups, have conversations, meet people, reach out, comment on friend’s posts, private message, reconnect with older connections.
  3. LinkedIn: Send someone a note that has an interesting profile, job of interest to you, similar experience, or experience you desire – ask to have a virtual meet up for coffee.
  4. Mentor others – find someone to mentor
  5. Get a new mentor and/or coach
  6. Volunteer somewhere new
  7. Join a meetup – virtual or in person
  8. Go somewhere new, alone – see what happens
  9. Start a conversation with someone when you never would…
  10. Go to an event (something of interest) – arrive early, mingle
  11. Host your own event - even if virtual
  12. Host or start your own meetup
  13. Talk to a stranger at the library!
  14. Start a fundraiser to support a cause of interest – us online websites for this and invite supporters to connect with you
  15. Go to a conference, sit in a new seat after every session, met the people next to you, invite someone to lunch/dinner
  16. Invite someone to talk to you (like mentor) and just listen
  17. Ask open-ended questions (not just yes/no answers)
  18. Start a blog, website, youtube channel, etc

Feel free to leave a comment and share your favorite way to network too!

15 Questions to ask Yourself TODAY!

As I write this we begin the second quarter of 2017.  I hope this information is helpful no matter when you are tuning in!

We are horrible at checking in with ourselves...

Why is that?

We can’t seem to stop, reflect and check in on our progress.  It’s easy to beat ourselves up at the end of the year when we don’t achieve our goals, but not easy to force ourselves to stop and course correct mid-year.

Capture.JPG

No Bueno!

So, let's do a check in together, right now. No matter when you read this, the content will be helpful!

  1. On a scale of 1-10 how would you rate your growth, progress and goal achievement for the last 90 days?
  2. What do you want the theme for your next 12-months to be?
  3. What is one new thing you want to do?
  4. What is one new thing you want to discover?
  5. Who do you want to spend more time within the next 12-months?
  6. What skills do you want to learn, improve or master?
  7. Which personal quality do you want to develop?
  8. Which personal strengths do you want to strengthen?
  9. What do you want your everyday life to be like?
  10. What do you want your everyday life to feel like?
  11. Which habits do you NEED to change or get rid of?
  12. Which habits do you NEED to cultivate or grow?
  13. What do you want to achieve career-wise?
  14. At this moment, what is your number one goal for the next 12-months?
  15. What is one action you will take RIGHT NOW to move closer to that goal?

How to find more time in your day

Raise your hand if you would like more time?! (did you raise your hand?)

I thought time-management would be a great subject to start the year off talking about. Let’s face it, we can all use more time. Time is the number one excuse people use for not achieving their goals and not going for their dreams.

So today we are going to talk about how to put more time back in your day (or make it feel that way at least).

I have two exercises to get you started that you can implement right away.

Exercise One:

  • Write down everything you do in a day. Walk around with a notepad and write down all your activities and how much time it took to complete them. The more detailed you get with this the better.
  • Keep this log for an entire week (note you can do it for just work or just home – or both – choose base on where you have time use issues).
  • After a week analyze the list. Circle all the activities that were value added and needed to be done. This might be driving to work, brushing my teeth, sleeping, cooking dinner, etc. How many hours did you spend? How much time was left? Are there things on this list you can delegate to someone else, or hire someone to do for you? These are the items that must occur – so if we can get help, let’s do it!
  • Review the rest of the items on your list. Were there large chunks of time spent on non-value added activities? Or was it lots of small amounts of time? How can you remove some of those activities from your list and replace them with new value-added activities?

This exercise is a good starting point. It often creates some ah-ha moments and allows for removal of a few non-value activities that you may not have realized you spent as much time on as you do.

Exercise Two:

Focus on finding the thing that is blocking you from moving forward or making progress. That trigger that holds you back. Let me clarify.

  • I start to feel crunched for time when I get overwhelmed.
  • I get overwhelmed when I have a lot going on.
  • I have a lot going on when I’m not effectively completing one task before moving onto the next.

And I could continue here – but you get the idea. I know for me personally one of my “triggers” is a messy house. If my home is messy I feel cluttered, tense and like I have weights on my shoulders. As soon as I clean it up I am able to see the forest through the trees again and move forward.

You may know your trigger already, or you may not.

Using the concept of the 5-whys can help you get there. Ask why do I not have enough time. Then why again, and again and so on.

Hope these exercises are helpful! Feel free to reach out anytime if you need support.

Don't let time-management be the thing holding you back from achieving your goals! If you would like some support with creating a plan to free up more time feel free to schedule a 30-minute coaching session here.

How to be successful

Life Lessons from Corporate: Being successful doesn’t mean you are destined to fall or fail – it just means more success is around the corner for you to find.

There was a visual I used to show in corporate. Half the screen was blanked out and on one side it showed a person at the top of a peak.  They achieved their goal, they got to the top. Then the blank goes away to reveal around the corner was another mountain 10 times the size.

The point of the visual was actually centered around continuous improvement and productivity. To demonstrate that even when you think you are there, there could be more challenges. You may think you found the best, fastest, most direct route, but there is another peak to climb.

It was a great visual for different projects and activities. It was a really great way to explain that change and improvement need to be constant to keep pushing the company into new heights.

The visual is a perfect example for life...

  1. Are you seeking continuous improvement even when it feels like things are perfect and working?
  2. Are you pushing yourself higher, faster, harder to see what the next peak you can climb is?
  3. Do you feel like you have reached it all and things, “just can’t get any better than this”?

Well I have news for you – it can always get better.

So even if you think you have achieved it all and reached it all – don’t give up continuing to look for greatness and striving for more.  Being successful doesn’t mean you are destined to fall or fail – it just means more success is around the corner for you to find.

What will it take for you to reach new success heights in 2017?

As always, here if you need me!

Why you need a plan!

Time and time again I continue to have the conversation with people around how to make big, long lasting changes. And time and time again I go back to plan your work, work your plan.

When you have a plan, schedule your tasks and follow through this will lead you to big changes. PERIOD...

If you have goals you want to meet you need to create a plan.

  • Know what you want – what is the vision or the big thing you want to achieve
  • Write SMART goals to go with it (specific, measurable, achievable, realistic, timely)
  • Generate tasks for each of these larger goals
  • Determine what is holding you back (road blocks) and what you can do to remove those
  • Back off a series of goals/tasks so you know when to start and how much time you need
  • Schedule all the tasks and actions you need to take in your calendar

Beyond this, there are specific strategies for logging and tracking these goals that you may find helpful.  There are many people out there that don’t like the idea of goal setting. There are even some coaches that say you don’t need to set goals, you just need to execute. Although I don't agree with this fully, I do agree with this on some level.

For me, it’s really all about.

  1. Having a vision and knowing what you are working toward
  2. Writing that vision down and making it visible
  3. Taking small steps toward that vision
  4. just starting - because momentum leads to big change

Beyond that, the process you use is just whatever process works best for you! This is one of the advantages of working with a coach. A coach can help hold you accountable and help you set and document goals in a way that works best for you!

Check out my tools page and pick the tool is right for you.  I have a business plan template, business planner, and goal setting workbook all available!

How to get clients

If you have any type of business (especially online) you know the value of having a list. You also know that at some point you will craft a funnel and sell to that list.  Funnels are a great way to stay consistent and communicate a clear message to all your followers in an organized fashion.  Funnels do work, but usually not till 2 things occur. 1) Your product is hands down amazing and exactly what the people on your list need OR 2) They know, like and trust you.

It’s hard to sell something people don’t understand or don’t need. And it's even harder to sell them something if they don't know who you are!

Having a list and funnel can be a key part of business but I would argue that for many service providers building know, like and trust is more important.  Let me give you three examples.

Client One: Joined my email list in January of 2016. She joined in response to an event I was hosting.  She took advantage of an offer for a free coaching call in March. We connected and it wasn’t the right time for her to invest.  She continued to follow me on FB, in my group, my blog and my list. In September, she took advantage of a one-time offer for a month of coaching and officially became a client, after 9 months of following me.  She has since participated in group coaching and is officially an engaged follower!

Client Two: Also joined my email list in January of 2016.  She would regularly respond to my emails and say hello and ask a question here and there.  In June, she was ready for support through a job transition. We conducted an intensive and she was now officially a client!

Client Three: Joined my email list in May of 2016. She was someone from my previous network that I had lost touch with. I saw her post on LinkedIn about starting her own business and I reached out and offered to support her. We had a lovely collaboration call and she joined my list.  She would reach out and say hello here and there and one day this November I woke up to see she booked 3-months of coaching, and paid in full, from a link on my website.

All of these relationships came from building know, like and trust and nurturing my list.  I’ve only shared three examples, but there are many others just like it. And as my list grows, collaboration and clients grow.

What are you doing to build know, like and trust with your tribe and followers?  Join my “How to nurture your list” training here: https://discovery-coaching.teachable.com/

How to build a perfect website and blog

Okay, so this title is slightly misleading because there is no right answer. Lately, I have been making some updates to my website and reading a lot of recommendations from others on what makes a website good. In this process, I have come to the following conclusions.

1)  You need to like your website – period. Make sure you feel good about how it looks. If it doesn’t get you excited, it won’t get anyone else excited.

2) If you don’t want to do something the way “everyone else does” then don’t. Many think you need to be like others, but in reality, you need to stand out just as much. Don’t be afraid to break the mold and do it your way.

3) You must have an opt-in! Whether you give something away (checklist, workbook, etc) or you just find a creative way to collect emails. You need to be collecting emails of your visitors and growing your list.  (Note I will talk about why later)

4) You should be looking at what your competition is doing, regularly. Find a couple other businesses you believe in and see what they are doing. You don’t need to copy them, but be sure to take good notes. If this is the type of business you want to to be, they may have the type of website you want to have too.

5) Try a “start here” page that is different from your homepage but leads visitors to all the spots you want them to go.

6) You must have an about page! People what to know you, like you, trust you – they want to be your friend before they buy from you or listen to you.  This is a chance to share a story and a bit about you and what you can do for them. I think there are bloggers that leave this part out – be sure you don’t miss this.

7) Have fun. A website is such an amazingly creative way to express yourself. Above all else have fun with it, and if you need support just hire an expert!

I recommend Charissa De Silva for website support.

Let's talk about authenticity

UNCONVENTIONAL = AUTHENTIC

Being unconventional really means being your true self, the real you regardless of what others think or do.  It gets back to being authentic and being you.

When I work with clients we dig into this to help you not only identify what truly makes you unique in this world but we work through the fear (we all have) around being our self and not caring what others think.

~Be aware at all times
~Don’t “try too hard” or force it
~Have an open mind
~Trust your gut
~Know your values and priorities
~Focus on personal growth
~Know your personal elevator pitch and how to describe yourself

Mindset Held me Back

Dear Coach Jen,

What was the hardest part about starting a business in Costa Rica?

There were a lot of things that were both a blessing and a curse! I lived in the jungle 5 minutes from the beach and with a pool at my house. That can make it hard to stay focused!  I had internet issues at times, mostly just slow speed. The power would go out regularly which would impact my wifi and phone connection.  BUT… Mindset--- this was my biggest block. I was having so much fun it was hard to stop and get myself focused to be in business. I found I would make a lot of excuses that had nothing to do with my business. It was too hot, I had no desk, etc.  Once I realized I was holding myself back I got committed! I met with a coach, I went to a conference in the US, I hosted a HUGE event and spent hours coaching and building content.  Within 2 months I went from saying I had a business to really having one with paying clients and movement forward!

You will make excuses no matter where you are. Catch yourself doing it, get focused and change your mindset!

What is a Niche?

Dear Coach Jen,

I keep hearing people talking about “Niche”… what exactly is that and why do I care?

Intensives(2).jpg

Niche in itself is a pretty funny word! Basically having a niche means you have identified a specific area you serve for your business.  Potty training coach to moms, tobacco specialty shop, you get the idea. The key piece to the Niche is you have a product or service to offer to a specific customer.

Niching can be scary for some people because they are very afraid they will lose potential customers. But that couldn’t be farther from the truth. You are more likely to help more people when people can see you and understand you.  Let’s take the potty training coach for example.  If she said she was a life coach for moms she may bring a lot of moms in but not necessarily moms that need potty training support. So although her following may grow, they wont convert to clients!  But if she gets laser focused she is going to attract that ideal client right away because they understand what she does and can see how she will support them.  The more you can attract that specific client you can serve, the better off you are.

So knowing your Niche will allow your business to grow by attracting the right clients and not a broad brush of potential clients…

I don't know what business to start!

Dear Coach Jen,

I have some ideas for a business I want to start, but I’m not sure if there is a need. What should I do next?

This is a great question, and let me just say, you are not alone! This is probably the number one challenge future entrepreneurs face before getting their businesses going (or in some cases even after going).

If you are experiencing this challenge you probably got the cart before the horse. Don’t get me wrong brainstorming is critical, but you need to take a step back.  Figure out who you want to serve and then go work on solving their problems. If you jump ahead to the solution you will likely miss something critical.  Make sure you are clear on the person you are serving first.  After you gain that clarity you can go back and ask them, survey them, research them, etc.  This is where you can really dig in deeper and solve the problem they have.

So keep those ideas handy, but go back and make sure you are 100% clear on who you are wanting to serve first!
